July 1, 2019, The Hill: Tim Ryan calls for mental health counselor in every school as part of education plan https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/451147-tim-ryan-calls-for-mental-health-counselor-in-every-school-as-part-of Democratic presidential hopeful Rep. Tim Ryan (Ohio) on Thursday called for mental health counselors to be assigned to all public schools as part of a broader public education plan. Shortly before his campaign rolled out his education plan, Ryan tweeted that every U.S. public school needs a mental health counselor on their premises. … Ryan's campaign said that, if elected president, his administration would aim to invest $50 billion in federal programs to aid public schools. … “Seventy-three percent of [school shooters] feel shamed, traumatized or bullied. We need to make sure that these kids feel connected to the school. That means a mental health counselor in every single school in the United States,” Ryan said. “We need to start playing offense. If our kids are so traumatized they are getting a gun and going into our schools, we’re doing something wrong, too, and we need reform around trauma-based care," he continued.
Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
