April 11, 2025, WIBW TV, Topeka, KS: Whitson Elementary's Strive room offers special space for students with autism
Video:
When you enter the Strive Room, you may notice the dimmer lights and untraditional classroom layout, and that’s because it’s specifically designed to serve high functioning children with autism who may have a hard time learning in a typical classroom.
Teacher: . . . What we encourage is for them to be themselves. It’s all about acceptance and accepting who they are and where they are in life. Not only accepting it, but celebrating it.
We give them tools to handle that stress, to handle that anxiety, to be able to communicate with peers. Most of all, to be themselves, to celebrate who they are. . . .
Reporter: Other schools in the district are also helping to promote inclusivity with special sensory rooms where students and staff can unwind.
