A screening of “Paper Tigers” is offered to the public at 6 p.m. Sept. 20.
The movie will be shown at the Sunnyside High School auditorium with refreshments available.
The documentary focuses on the lives of staff and students of Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, where students had behavioral issues and poor academic performances. They were usually suspended from school.
After discovering the studies on adverse childhood experiences, the school changed the way students were handled. The staff began showing them kindness and provided in-school suspension instead of automatic punitive punishments.
The School District is offering the event to “build on the work” it did last year, training staff and departments on adverse childhood experiences, Communications Director Jessica Morgan said in a press release.

Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
