A classroom and specially-trained staffer for a room created to handle students with severe behavioral issues at the district's middle and elementary school campus. The topic of working with students who have behavioral problems was brought up by Snow, but supported by Doug Crawford, elementary school principal. Assisting troubled students Snow and Crawford emphasized these are not the type of students who have to be placed in an alternative school setting. Although students with behavioral issues who may be placed in the proposed classroom can come from all grades, K-12, the biggest need is found in grades K-8. For that reason, Crawford, Snow and Robert Bolte, middle school principal, talked about a room at the town campus where both schools are located. Crawford said by removing students temporarily, and dealing with behavior in a controlled environment, like a special classroom, would be an immediate and beneficial step…. Snow told the board this is not an alternative school situation, but said this is a growing problem in the elementary grades. Many times these students have to be disciplined and are sent home during a school day or taken off bus routes, she said. … Crawford and Bolte said some days there are no issues involving students or emotional displays which have to be handled outside the classroom or could lead to serious disruptions.
