Staten Island, NY: SPED program at Catholic schools "to address a rising need"

//June 4, 2018, Staten Island, NY, SILive: New special ed program coming to 3 Staten Island Catholic schools To address a rising need for special education seats on Staten Island, a new special education program will soon be available for students in three Staten Island Catholic elementary schools…. "We monitor how many children in our system of the 212 schools come to us with an IEP, and that number is just growing," McNiff said. "We feel that, because of that, we have to make sure we can service these children. Up until now, we have been, but we need to do more." The Staten Island schools that will participate in the new program are: Our Lady Star of the Sea, Huguenot; St. Adalbert's School, Elm Park; and Holy Rosary School, South Beach. St. Adalbert's School has offered a special education program to students for the last three years, but this new initiative will add resources. "This is an inclusion program," said McNiff. "We want these kids in traditional classrooms, but the special education teacher will help the classroom teacher with modifications required for the child."… Using feedback from the surveys, the Archdiocese identified the types of services needed, and which communities expressed the most need for services.
