Oct 21, 2019, WNAX Radio 570, Yankton, SD: Schools Look for Help with Special Education Costs https://wnax.com/news/180081-schools-look-for-help-with-special-education-costs/ One of the fastest rising costs for South Dakota schools is special education. Wade Pogany, Executive Director of the Associated School Boards, says the number of students needing services is expanding rapidly… An interim legislative committee is studying the issue but Pogany says they haven’t come to any conclusions yet…. The state set up an “extraordinary cost fund” for schools to use in case of extra special education expenses. Pogany says that fund has been close to being tapped out the last couple of years. Audio: “It’s a hard, hard question with special ed…costs are just skyrocketing. Some of our schools have kiddos that really need a lot of help.”
Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
