Aug 13, 2025, ABC 10, Denison, TX: Sherman police train to interact with people with autism
SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — By the end of this week, all Sherman police officers will be trained on autism safety.
Through a partnership with The Owen Foundation, officers will learn how to de-escalate emergencies involving people who have autism.
Even though not it's not required by the state, the chief of police is making the training mandatory in Sherman.
"The number with autism that are being diagnosed is rapidly increasing, so it's definitely an issue in our community for our emergency management personnel to know how to handle those individuals in the event of an emergency," said Owen Foundation founder Brina Dutton.
The Sherman Police Department is the first Grayson County agency to get the training.
