(S. Australia) Adelaide: Lights "celebrated World Autism Awareness Day"

April 4, 2025, Gov. of S. Australia: Lighting up for autism awareness and inclusion

Iconic landmarks across Adelaide lit up in a spectrum of colours on World Autism Awareness Day, Wednesday  2 April, as South Australia celebrated World Autism Month.

The colourful display celebrated South Australia’s Autistic people and autism communities, highlighting their place at the heart of decision-making through the Office for Autism.

Lights illuminated prominent sites including Parliament House, Adelaide Railway Station, Adelaide Oval, Riverbank Footbridge, Festival Centre Walk of Fame, UniSA City West - Bradley Building, Adelaide Airport, Adelaide Convention Centre and Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

This visual celebration is just one of several events and initiatives being led by the Office for Autism during April – World Autism Month – to enhance inclusion and support for South Australian Autistic people and their families at every stage of life.

This starts at age 6 to 18 months through the new Inklings Program, with support for babies who are showing differences in their interaction and communication.

Inklings offers eligible families and caregivers 6 to 10 sessions with a supportive, trained practitioner to help them feel confident in understanding and responding to their baby’s ways of communicating thoughts, feelings and needs.

For organisations undertaking projects or initiatives to support or promote genuine autism inclusion in South Australia, the latest round of the Autism Works in the Community Grants Program is now open to applicants.

The program aims to support projects in businesses, venues and community spaces that foster autistic inclusion and increase knowledge, understanding and belonging for Autistic people and autism communities in our state.

Applications are open until 9 May 2025 and an in-person information session will be held at the first Autism Works Employment Summit on 30 April, at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

This free, full-day event will bring together key industries, including defence, property, mining and energy, construction, tourism, advanced manufacturing and IT, to gain practical information and explore strategies for improving autism inclusion in the workplace.

The program features panel discussions with industry leaders, pathways for organisations to access autism awareness training, an exciting line up of expert speakers, and much more.

Throughout April, and every month, we encourage all South Australians to join us in acknowledging the strengths, achievements and uniqueness of Autistic and autism communities.
