Aug 30, 2023, Alberton Record: Family Walk to embrace differences in support for Autism Awareness https://albertonrecord.co.za/351336/family-walk-to-embrace-differences-in-support-for-autism-awareness/
Local NGO Jozi 4 Autism has organised an Autism Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo on Sunday, 17 September 2023. It’s a follow-up to their successful series of walks held from 2014 to 2019, and an ideal opportunity for families with children to spend time in an iconic location while helping to raise funds for this vital cause.
With registration on the day from 06:30 and the walk itself beginning at 07:30, it promises to be a lovely fresh Spring morning. Any lingering morning chills can be dispelled by the delicious food and coffee on sale. After the walk, wander over to the bandstand area, which will be overflowing with food vendors, exhibitors and things to explore! Plus, you can see the learning experiences and opportunities that Johannesburg-based companies and individuals are creating for autistic people….
“We’re excited for the Joburg community to get an insight into the world of neurodiversity and celebrate the differences that make each of us unique,” commented Sumaya Babamia, Speech-Language Therapist, Audiologist and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “We guarantee a fun day out for all, and everyone who takes part will be helping to make a real difference in the lives of autistic children and their families,” she added.
“Past Autism Walks have helped us complete projects including revamping an inner-city playground, and reaching out to autistic kids in disadvantaged communities,” commented Tasneem Abrahams, Occupational Therapist and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “We’d encourage anyone who is the parent of an autistic child, or knows someone who is, to take part and help us make more noise about the needs and contribution of autistic people,” she added.
“Raising a child with autism is immensely rewarding, but it can also be challenging – especially in communities where support and understanding are constrained by economic circumstances,” explained Karen Gouvelis, Website Creator, Founder of Strange Duck and Director of Jozi 4 Autism. “On Sunday, 17 September, we’ll be stepping out to change this and we’re looking forward to a record turnout for our Zoo Walk,” she added.
