The Western Cape Education Department will spend an additional R68 million [$38M] to improve support for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)….

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier says there is a great need to improve support for learners with special needs….

Maynier says the department will also employ additional teachers, classroom assistants and therapists.

“The R68 million is part of a total additional allocation of R214.4 million [$120M] over the next three financial years. As part of our Rapid School Build programme, we will be constructing two new schools for learners with special needs, and an additional 28 classrooms at existing special schools or full-service schools, this year,” adds Maynier.

Meanwhile in January, parents with children living with autism said they continue to face many struggles.

They complain about the lack of access to proper schools and the never-ending waiting lists that some children are subjected to every year.
