April 26, 2025, CBS17, Raleigh, NC: Celebrating autism acceptance: NC program empowering dreams and independence
. . .A Caring Heart Case Management is a day program in eastern North Carolina that gives individuals living with autism an opportunity to practically learn anything they want to thrive.
“They could be doing laundry, learning to make their bed, or working on their math goal,” said Jasmine Lucas, day program manager.
Lucas says the goal is to teach each individual how to be independent along with doing some volunteer work. She says they also learn basic personal hygiene care to learn to connect with people.
“Every day, I ask myself, what am I on this earth for? What was I made for? I realize I’m special,” said Cherry.
Jeremy is right because this is the message they want to spread this Autism Acceptance Month.
“Autism is a neurological disorder, and it’s based on different levels and different types of functions. Each individual is different. They can still function, they can still learn, and they can still hold jobs,” said Assistant Program Director Angela Avens.
Speaking of jobs, Ronald already has one in mind.
“I want to work at a restaurant,” said James.
Beyond just learning basic skills, they also enjoy a range of fun activities. “Oh, I love to fish,” said Cherry. “I love to go horseback riding,” said James.
These activities not only bring joy but also help in their overall development.
But their biggest joy. “I have a goal to ensure everyone has a bright smile,” said Cherry.
