The Punjab Assembly’s Special Education Committee has approved the Autism School and Resource Centre Bill 2025, paving the way for the province’s first dedicated institution for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The first centre will be established in Lahore, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directing that it be set up within two months.

The Chief Minister will also serve as Chairperson of the Board of Governors responsible for overseeing the centre’s operations.

Purpose and scope

The bill, which will now be presented in the Punjab Assembly for final approval, mandates the creation of a fully functional school and resource centre to provide education, therapy, training, and inclusive care for children with autism. The centre will also offer support to families, conduct research, and collaborate with other institutions. . . .

Governance and functions

The Board will be responsible for key decisions including staff appointments, performance evaluations, annual budgeting, training programmes, and public awareness campaigns. A Selection Committee will be formed to appoint a Principal with relevant autism expertise, while the institution will maintain a dedicated fund for its operations, supported by government grants and donations.

Once approved, the Act will come into immediate effect, marking a milestone in Punjab’s efforts to promote inclusive education and social acceptance for individuals with special needs.
