Jan 29, 2018, Osseo (MN) Sun Focus: Heights’ pre-K programming expands to meet demand Director of Community Education Kristen Stuenkel, Early Childhood Manager Karen Kremer and Education Support Coordinator Marcia Walker presented a report on early childhood and early childhood special education programs on Jan. 9 at the Columbia Heights Public Schools board meeting. Since last year, pre-K enrollment is up from 150 to almost 250, and the district has added a full-day classroom to Valley View and Highland for a total of two at each school, Kremer said. … “As we’ve seen an increase in early childhood enrollment, we’ve also seen an increase in our referrals for special education from birth through age 5 by 20 percent when we compare numbers from this year to last year,” she said. “Of those referrals we’ve received, about 90 percent of those students qualify for special education. So we are truly collaborating and providing early intervention services, which we know is best practice.”
