The Northeast Wisconsin Mental Health Connection has been awarded a $1 million grant to improve the mental health of youth in the tri-county area that includes Winnebago, Outagamie and Calumet counties. A local Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows there has been a significant increase in depression among our young people that often goes undetected and may lead to serious consequences.
In order to address that The N.E.W Connection has initiated a “Healthy Teen Minds” project that focuses on prevention, promoting resilience and coping skills among youth, and intervention for those teens who are already suffering from depression. Six local high schools will be adopting “Sources of Strength,” an evidence-based suicide prevention and wellness program that builds resilience in teens by fostering positive peer relationships and connections to trusted adults.
Speakers at the League of Women Voters lunch Wednesday, Dec. 13, will be Wendy Magas, Healthy Teen Minds project coordinator and Rachel Podoski, project evaluator. They will share with us how the project is being implemented, who the community partners are and the plan to implement the Sources of Strength program in all area public school districts in the next couple of years. There also are plans to include adopting social-emotional learning and support in elementary and middle schools. …
