Omaha: Outside counselors work with students; focus on relaxation, coping skills

The children are part of the Connections and Bounce Back programs facilitated through Project Harmony in Omaha area public schools. The program started three years ago and it's now in four area school districts and on-track to reach 2,100 children this year. School counselors work with 90 mental health therapists who visit the schools weekly to work with individuals and groups. They work on relaxation techniques, learning tools to cope with stress and trauma. With parent's permission, therapists will also work with the children outside of school. According to Project Harmony, more than 60-percent of children are victimized with violence each year. Unchecked, those children can lash out with behavior issues and violent behaviors later in life. …
