(Nigeria) Church opens school for 'children born with autism'

Aug 30, 2023, Punch: Church opens free school for autistic children

Omega Power Ministries has unveiled a no-tuition school for autistic and Down syndrome children in Abia State.

A statement by the founder, OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, said that the school was completed on August 28, 2023, adding that the school would cater to all Nigerians from any religious setting.

He said, “We just concluded the property yesterday, 28th August 2023. This school will help children born with autism and Down syndrome in Abia. Already, OPM is currently operating three free schools in Abia State.

“If you can remember the first OPM free school for children born with Autism and Down syndrome was established in Rivers State, in October 2020 on Greg Ogbuife Street and another one at Ogbodo Road, Rukpokwu, Rivers State.

“Two luxury buses were bought to pick the special children to school and also return them after school. With the establishment of this free school, the total number of free schools OPM is operating is 28 free schools in 12 years now.”

He also encouraged members of society not to stigmatise children with such challenges.

“Do you know some families hide these children whenever they have visitors? Do you know some of them feel that they are useless? They forget that God can never create any useless person. There is an ability in every disability.

It is just for you to help the children discover their abilities and they will become great Children. All OPM-free schools are open for both Muslims and Christians from other denominations.”

Chinyere added that for more than 12 years, each student had been given four sets of school uniforms, a school bag, a sandal, one canvas, and some set of books.

“They don’t pay for anything, fully sponsored through tithes and offerings from OPM church,” he added.
