July 21, 2025, NorthJersey.com: Bierman Autism Centers to host 'sensory-friendly' summer bashes in three NJ towns
If you're looking to close out the summer on a high note but are in need of a sensory-friendly environment, you're in luck. Bierman Autism Centers is hosting three free "end-of-summer" bashes throughout New Jersey in August.
The events — which will take place on Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon in Ramsey and Princeton, as well as Aug. 9 in Eatontown — have been specially designed for children with autism ages 2 to 9.
Each bash will feature a low-sensory atmosphere for children with hypersensitivity, consisting of no bright or flashing lights, no loud noises, a quiet-zone tent and plenty of space for children to explore. . . .
Admission is free for all three events, but space is limited. Families can reserve tickets online at the Bierman Autism Centers website.
Autism and sensory issues
According to advocacy group Autism Speaks, "People with autism can experience both hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) and hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness) to a wide range of stimuli. Most people have a combination of both."
"Many autistic people experience hypersensitivity to bright lights or certain light wavelengths (e.g., LED or fluorescent lights)," the group continues on its website. "Certain sounds, smells, textures and tastes can also be overwhelming. This can result in sensory avoidance — trying to get away from stimuli that most people can easily tune out."
