Daniela Garcia, R-Holland, that would modify school seclusion and restraint rules unanimously passed the Michigan House on Thursday, Nov. 9. … The bill would allow school resource officers, who are contracted to a school district from a law enforcement department in the region, to utilize their training to resolve incidents at school that may arise. The current law calls for specific training of teachers, administrators and education personnel in regulations for seclusion and restraint in emergency situations. … Under the law, seclusion and restraint can generally last no longer than 15 minutes for an elementary school pupil or 20 minutes for a middle school or high school pupil. Schools must have detailed documentation and additional support like a change of staff or introducing a nurse or specialist if seclusion or restraint lasts longer.
