Jan 27, 2019, Michigan NPR: Bill would create mental health training for Michigan teachers http://www.michiganradio.org/post/bill-would-create-mental-health-training-michigan-teachers
There’s a bill in the Michigan legislature which could lead to teachers getting special mental health training.
State Sen. Sylvia Santana’s bill directs the Departments of Education & Health and Human Services to develop a professional development course for teachers on “mental health first aid.”
“Our teachers are our first responders with our students,” says Santana. “We want them to be able to have a mechanism where they can identify if there are any issues of mental health with our students, or a trauma, any type of mental illnesses that might be impacting their education.”
Suicidal threats were the most frequently reported tip to Michigan’s "OK-2-Say" program for state school children in the final quarter of 2018.
Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
