Merrillville, IN: Each police officer to get kits to help deal with autistic people

Dec 29, 2023, Munster, IN, The Times: ALERT Merrillville police receive donation of Ben's Blue Bags

MERRILLVILLE — Local organizations have teamed up to provide the Merrillville Police Department with important tools to help officers when responding to calls involving children or adults with autism or special needs.

Logan’s Love has provided Ben’s Blue Bags to each Merrillville police officer, sponsored through a $7,000 donation from the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, the Town of Merrillville said.

“This is a very generous donation,” Merrillville Police Chief Kosta Nuses said.

Nuses accepted the donation on behalf of approximately 60 officers on the police force at Tuesday’s town council meeting.

Nicole Reveliotis created the organization earlier this year to honor the loss of her son, Logan Ruiz. Ruiz was a 10-year-old boy with autism who died in a train accident on Aug. 27, 2022. He was completely nonverbal and experienced elopement, a side effect of autism causing children to wander away from caregivers or secure locations….

All officers at the Merrillville Police Department have been provided with a Ben's Blue Bag to go into their squad cars. The bags were donated by Logan's Love, and sponsored by AHEPA.

Reveliotis and other Logan’s Love members want to show their support for the special needs community, and work with first responders. After being asked, a local AHEPHA chapter graciously agreed to sponsor the bags, the news release stated.
