MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – Students and teachers at Center McMechen Elementary participated in a sensory friendly parade Friday morning to close out their weeklong observance of Autism Acceptance Week.
This year’s theme was “Celebrate Minds of All Kinds” and over the last few days, kids have been learning more about autism awareness and acceptance through lessons and general class discussions.
Beth Ann Winland, Center McMechen’s Applied Behavior Analysis Preschool Teacher, helped organize the activities throughout the week and the parade on Friday.
As they walked, students held banners with facts about autism and different sensory items like bubbles and pinwheels. Some students also wore headphones.
I think growing the awareness makes the acceptance grow as well. And like I said, since we have these programs in our school, these kids aren’t seen as separate from our school.
They are part of our friend group. They are part of our classrooms. We have kids that push for inclusion into the gen ed classroom. Our students here just know them as friends. Not anything different than that. So really spreading that awareness. And we told them, you know, take it and spread it to your family and friends and tell them. Because when you ask questions and you learn, you really open up that segue to form acceptance.”
