Several dozen school districts in Maine now offer services for children ages three to five with disabilities. These districts have taken on this role from the Maine Department of Education's Child Development Services. It will be another two years before all districts switch to the new model.

While these changes are underway, a new preschool will open this fall for children with severe special needs who are still waiting for early intervention services.

Workers are turning a former 10,000 square foot office building off of John Roberts Road into a preschool for children with special needs. The design features many windows to let in natural light. . . .

. . . His team is building classrooms and therapy spaces for 36 children.

“If they don't get that early intervention, I think they are more at risk of needing that support later,” Heal explained.

Skills for Life will have rolling enrollment and accept children with a referral from CDS or their local school district. They do not have to live in Cumberland County. The goal is to ensure a smoother transition for children of all abilities to public school.
