Heather Hill, Z’ryiah’s teacher, implemented flexible seating in her special education classroom at the beginning of the school year. She slowly has been transforming her classroom to include more flexible seating options such as the rocking chair, a sofa, a soft rocker and a bean bag chair. … Kristy Genung, a second-grade teacher at Lynchburg’s Linkhorne Elementary School, has been using flexible seating for almost three years, and Amanda Dean, a math teacher at Forest Middle School, completely implemented flexible seating in her classroom this year. The trio each said the seating helps students focus during class. “In the classroom, sometimes there are a lot of distractions, and you’re just sitting at a desk, and it’s kind of hard, and so they’re able to be comfortable, so their grades have improved, and their progress has improved,” Hill said. …
