Counselors and therapists say new study not surprising; You never know what children have endured
“We say it’s good that Illinois is on the lower end of things, but 40 percent of kids is a high number,” Davis said.
And almost one-fifth of Illinois kids have multiple adverse experiences, Davis said, and nearly one-fourth of children have had one before age 6. …
“What we know about childhood trauma’s effects is alarming, frankly,” Landgraf said. “Trauma during critical developmental stages can cause serious and pervasive detriment.”
Children who have experienced something traumatic may show the negative impact in the classroom.
“We regularly see evidence of the effects of childhood trauma in the classroom, during personal and career development counseling, and in students’ interpersonal relationships,” Landgraf said. “We have to remember, as Annette Breaux said, ‘nine times out of ten the story behind [concerning student behavior] won’t make you angry; it will break your heart.’”
But some children may show no signs....
