April 5, 2026, Eastleigh Voice: Mombasa unveils early autism detection plan, specialised schools for children with developmental conditions
Mombasa County plans to introduce early autism detection programmes and establish specialised schools to support children living with developmental conditions.
The measures are designed to ensure prompt diagnosis and improve access to appropriate education.
Coast Region Coordinator for the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Juliet Ruwa, revealed that approximately 720 children with autism are currently registered in the county.
“Awareness of autism was limited in the past, but the number of diagnosed cases is rising steadily,” she explained.
Ruwa noted that existing specialised schools are scarce and often difficult for families to access, particularly in Jomvu, Changamwe, and Kisauni.
She called for the creation of at least one school focused entirely on children with autism and urged the expansion of therapy services at the community level.
“Our children require therapy, and having occupational therapy available in local dispensaries would make a significant difference,” she said.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir stated that the county plans to incorporate autism screening into routine health services to detect the condition earlier. . . .
In education, the county is considering assigning certain schools exclusively to children with autism, enabling tailored learning environments suited to their needs.
“Designating a school to serve only children with autism could greatly enhance specialised support,” Governor Abdulswamad said.
Currently, more than 20 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Mombasa accommodate children with disabilities. However, officials emphasised the need for additional facilities that specifically address autism. . . .
