What will happen in another 4 years? How can we go on like this? This is a national (and international) problem of monumental proportions. We have an entire new class of children who cannot be accommodated by the system: many are manifestly neurologically impaired. Meanwhile, the government and the medical profession sleep on regardless.

Minister Alan Dillon received confirmation today from the Department of Education that six further special education classes have been approved for the 2026/27 school year.

Minister Dillon says this is the second tranche for the new school year, adding to the six general classroom accommodation approvals already secured for schools across the county.

The six new schools who will receive additional classrooms are:

Ballinrobe Community School, Ballinrobe

Scoil Muire agus Pádraig, Swinford

Coláiste Mhuire, Tourmakeady

Rice College, Westport

Scoil Phádraig, Westport

Claremorris NS, Claremorris

A total of seven secondary schools and five primary schools across Mayo will now have new special classes from September 2026.
