EURODIVERSITY Celebration Week 2024 is well underway in St. Patrick’s National School in Murlog.
Often used as an umbrella term to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism, Tourette Syndrome and ADHD, neurodiversity is all about recognising those who think differently.
And St. Patrick’s NS think they can benefit from different thinkers!
With approximately 15 to 20 per cent of the population having a neurological difference, instead of labelling people, St. Patrick’s NS take abalanced view of their pupil’s unique strengths and challenges.
Working hard to break down the challenges that pupils who are neurodivergent face, St. Patrick’s NS strive to provide an environment which recognises their pupil’s strengths, provides a pupil-centred approach to teaching and a school environment that helps all pupils to thrive within their individual learning styles.
The school has been decorated inside and out as part of the celebration with colourful displays, informative posters and positive affirmations.
The school library has been extended to incorporate a host of new titles to educate and inform the pupils on neurodiversity.
Pupils are being educated through workshops which include presentations, discussion, games and activities, and parents are being supported through an upcoming workshop also.
“The goal is to increase acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity in the world around us,” a spokesperson from St. Patrick’s NS concluded.
