July 30, 2024, Roscommn Herald: Seven new special classes approved for County Roscommon schools

Seven new special classes have been announced for County Roscommon schools next year.

Ballyforan Mixed NS, Cloverhill NS, Ballybay Central, Camcloon NS, Naomh Micheal agus Padraig, Granlahan NS and Castlerea Community School have all been included in the announcement.


It brings the number of special classes in County Roscommon to 48 for the 2024/25 academic year, according to local Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan.


Nationwide, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) has approved 402 new special classes, with 284 at the primary level and 118 at the post-primary level. This expansion brings the total number of special classes across the country to 3,324 for the upcoming school year,” she said.


Senator  Dolan added: “I want to extend my genuine thanks to all our local schools for their unwavering efforts in partnership with the Department of Education and the National Council for Special Education. . . .


 “The new classes will significantly impact numerous students and parents, offering them the support they need in both primary and secondary schools. . . .


 “By integrating these special classes into our schools in County Roscommon, we are taking a vital step toward creating an education system where every child, regardless of their needs, can thrive and succeed. . . . 


 “The number of Special Needs Assistants has increased to 21,000 and there are over 1,000 more Special Education teachers than in 2020 bringing a total of over 41,500 qualified staff dedicated to working with children with additional needs. Fine Gael in government has ensured the highest budget of €2.8 billion [$3B] allocated to Special Education within the Department in 2024.
