Jan 12, 2026, Breaking News: Nearly 170 new special classes announced for 159 schools across the State
The Department of Education has confirmed the approval of 168 new special classes nationally, across 159 schools.
A significant number of the special classes have been allocated to schools in Cork.
Schools were notified on Monday, with further special class sanctions to follow in the coming weeks.
13 special classes were announced for schools in Cork, eight were announced for schools in Co Tipperary, and six were allocated to schools in Co Meath.
A Department of Education spokesperson said the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) expects to continue to sanction further new special classes over the coming weeks.
"The earlier sanctioning of these classes will provide clarity for parents and allow schools more time for the planning and establishment of new special classes," they said. . . .
Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O'Shea welcomed the sanctioning of the new special classes across Cork, describing the announcement as a positive step for children with additional educational needs and their families.
He said the new classes will make a real difference on the ground. . . .
