May 22, 2024, Western People: Meeting plannied as Ballina seeks Autism-Friendly status
A public meeting will take place in Ballina to hear of plans for the town to achieve Autism-Friendly accredited status.
The Ballina Autism Friendly Town Committee will submit an application to AsIAM, Ireland’s national autism charity to achieve this status.
The Autism-Friendly Town initiative was launched in 2018 by AsIAm and aims to create a greater awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism so communities become more accessible and enjoyable places for autistic people of all ages.
If the application is successful, AsIAm will work with the Ballina community to train and support the town making it a more inclusive and ultimately autism friendly town.
The committee have asked as many businesses, organisations, sports clubs, community groups and all schools throughout the town to come onboard to undergo training and organisational changes to becoming autism friendly.
A similar initiative was set-up in Castlebar and took home the Inclusive Events Award at this year’s Autism Friendly Town Awards.
The Ballina committee will share more information about their plans at an upcoming public meeting. The meeting takes place next Monday, May 27 at 7pm in the Great National Hotel.
