(Ireland) Arklow celebrates move to be "Autism-Friendly Town"

Mar 26, 2025, Irish Independent: AsIAm founder Adam Harris praises Co Wicklow community as Autism-Friendly Town plan launched

The Arklow community and voluntary committee members flocked to the Arklow Bay Hotel recently to celebrate another massive step towards becoming a more inclusive town with the official launch of the Arklow Autism-Friendly Town initiative.

Packing into the hotel’s Asgard suite, representatives from clubs, community groups, businesses and special guest Adam Harris, founder of national autism charity AsIAm (Arklow’s partner in the initiative), joined the Arklow Autism-Friendly Town committee to mark the momentous occasion. . . .

Mr O’Toole then detailed progress made towards Arklow becoming an autism-friendly town, paying tribute to Derek Byrne who started the initiative a few years ago and has been working alongside AsIAm to advocate for people in the community on the autism spectrum.

Introducing local support groups All Kinds of Amazing, Little Warriors and The House, who were assisted along the way by Cllr Peir Leonard, Mr O’Toole said they have “worked tirelessly together to make Arklow a more inclusive town for everybody”. . . .

“It’s one of the most supportive, accepting and inclusive towns, and it’s a privilege to say I live here and am raising my four children here.
