(Ireland) 5% of children with ASD; 400 special classes every year for the next 3 years

Mar 11, 2025, Midlands 103: The State Has Failed Children With Autism For Years -Sorca Clarke

Around one in 20 schoolchildren are being diagnosed with autism.

That's a three-fold increase in under a decade, according to figures from the Department of Education.

It means around 400 new special classes would be needed every year for the next three years to keep up with demand.

Longford Westmeath TD Sorca Clarke is a mother to two autistic children, she says the State has been failing families in her position for many years.
