April 2, 2025, The Hindu: Awareness rally marks World Autism Day in Coimbatore
Around 40 children with autism participated in an awareness rally in the city on Wednesday to mark World Autism Day. The event was organised by Jayem Autism Centre and the District Differently Abled Welfare Office at Race Course.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar flagged off the rally and released balloons to mark the occasion. He emphasised the importance of early detection in managing autism. “Autism is a serious condition, and early diagnosis is key to providing care and support. The district administration will take steps to strengthen early detection measures and provide necessary care,” he said.
S. Chandramohan, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer, stated that the district has over 600 children diagnosed with autism. He noted that the number of cases is rising due to multiple factors, including maternal health and stress during pregnancy. He highlighted the need for early intervention, stating that timely support improves developmental outcomes.
He also mentioned that the government has established 32 dedicated centres for autism care. However, he pointed out that identifying children with autism remains a challenge, as many parents are reluctant to disclose their child’s condition due to social stigma, which is particularly high in rural areas.
