June 19, 2024, ChristianLearning.com: Christian Mother With An Autistic Child Answers The Question, ‘How Can God Use Autism?’

Autistic Child

Larah, a Christian mother of an autistic child gave encouraging reminders for all the parents raising their autistic kid. She mentioned the verses in John 9, wherein Jesus and his disciples met a man born blind. In verses 2 and 3, the disciples, asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” And Jesus responded, “Neither.

This came about so that the power of God might be displayed in him.”

She then explained that a child’s autism diagnosis was a hard thing to wrestle with. She guessed that maybe because those who were not autistic didn’t understand it. Sometimes, people blame someone or something because they don’t understand it and cannot cope with the hard situations. And the other reason was that parents were still fighting to surrender to God’s plan in their lives.

Furthermore, she clarified that she didn’t mean that God created autism. Then, she shared, “I say this with all love. But your child has autism today and will tomorrow, right? Then have you ever considered that God counted you worthy to raise an autistic child?” She encouraged the parents to praise God because having an autistic child wasn’t something that they or their children did. The scripture clearly said that things people didn’t understand happened so that the power of God might be displayed.

Moreover, she emphasized that their experience was a window for the world to see how they would navigate pain, suffering, and hardship. After that, she stressed an important question, “Will they see us, ‘count it all joy,’ when we face trials of many kind?” By then, people would end up asking those parents about how they managed to praise God even in the hard times. It would raise curiosity in people’s minds, especially about the kind of God who helped them. It would be an avenue for them to share their faith. And this is how she believed God would use autism.
