Grayson Co, TX: Schools to use $2M to support 200 students with autism

GUNTER, Texas (KTEN) — What would you do if you were awarded nearly $2 million?
For the Grayson County Special Education Co-Op, the answer is simple: Use the funds to strengthen services for students with autism.
"When I first started, I kind of had a little bit of a background of knowledge in autism," said special education teacher Danielle Johns.
Now with four years of real-world experience, she has experienced first-hand how scarcity in resources can impact students and their teachers.
"When we don't have the proper resources, or they don't have the proper resources, it takes time to find things that will work," Johns said.
Those resources include hybrid coaching models, evidence-based curriculua, and student support groups.
But this uphill battle will become less steep for nine Grayson County school districts. . . .
The state-funded Autism Education Grant will make a difference.
"This year, were receiving nearly $1 million, and then we have an equal amount pending the following year," Russell explained.
The resources will help 200 students enrolled in Grayson County schools have access to education tailored to their needs.
"This is not just a short-term solution; this will create a sustainable solution that will allow inclusive practices for our students long after that period ends,” Russell said. “We’re really excited about it."
