Fort Bend, TX: District sees increase in SPED students; many districts in Houston saw increases too

Fort Bend ISD saw an uptick in both its total enrollment and students enrolled in special education, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 6. Meanwhile, average teacher pay for FBISD is lower than some districts in the Greater Houston area.

Over the last five years, more than half of public school districts across the Greater Houston area lost students, with one district seeing a more than 15% decline in enrollment, data shows. . . .

Many school districts in the Greater Houston area saw an increase in the number of students enrolled in special education programs in the 2025-26 school year compared to the previous year. Of the group, Lamar CISD saw one of the largest increases in the area—up more than 11%.

According to data for 28 Greater Houston-area school districts, the districts with the highest enrollments in 2021-22 and in 2025-26 were Houston ISD, Cy-Fair ISD and Katy ISD.
