Local and area families with autistic children and/or youngsters with developmental concerns now have a new place to bring their children without driving to St. Louis or to Missouri.

On April 27, SSM Health hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Cardinal Glennon Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Ruth's House Campus at 7325 Marine Road in Edwardsville.

The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. Instead of traveling 40 to 60 minutes for medical providers, most visitors will only need to commute from five to 15 minutes.

The center will provide a variety of services for children with autism and developmental concerns, including evaluation, speech, occupational and behavioral therapy. The center is the only one of its kind in southern Illinois.

The facility is funded in part by a $1.5 million grant in 2021 through the state and also through additional fundraising activities with the Knights of Columbus and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. …

The location is immediately west of the Moose Lodge on Illinois Route 143 and is set well back from the road. A long, single-lane driveway provides access.

The parking lot around the building was packed with vehicles for the ribbon cutting. An employee serving as a parking attendant for the day directed visitors to the back of the building, saying the front portion was slated for "future expansion."

Leaders with SSM Health cut the ribbon on April 27 to officially open SSM's new autism and development center on Marine Road, near the Moose Lodge.
