Barile has proposed a nearly $43.5 million budget for the 2018-19 year, compared to the current year’s budget of almost $40.9 million. Barile told the Board of Education that his proposal allows the district to hire an additional high school science teacher and a second teacher for English language learners. But $1.1 million of the increase would go for additional costs of special education. Of the nearly 400 students who need some form of special education, 356 were served this year within the district. Thirty of these students were sent outside the district this year to get the services they need, but the district had budgeted for only 18 of them and has asked the town for a special $500,000 appropriation to make up the difference.
