Every student learns differently. Some are able to retain information by sitting still in a regular classroom setting. Other students learn better by doing something physical while they are listening, such as fidgeting with a pencil or using “thinking putty,” said Amber Kalthoff, special education teacher and Title I interventionist at Upsala Area Schools (UAS).
Last year, the UAS developed a sensory learning program to help students. But with a grant from the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA), the school is able to offer students an even stronger program.
As part of the program, UAS added a sensory room recently. Even though the room is located in the elementary school section, it is available to all students who need it. …
