Columbia Cty, GA: $3M for charter school expansion; numbers rise to 530 students

June 21, 2018, Augusta (GA) Chronicle: Columbia County charter school growing Columbia County’s first and only charter school is expanding. County officials approved this week for the School for Arts-Infused Learning to begin phase two of developing its 20-acre campus on Blanchard Woods Drive. A planned 20,000-square-foot building will house the school’s middle-school classrooms. SAIL expects to break ground on the $3 million building as soon as next month…. The expansion coincides with the school’s steady growth. The charter school opened in August with 434 students in 20 homerooms from kindergarten through sixth grade. For the coming school year, because of a rise in the number of special-education students, SAIL over-enrolled slightly to allow 530 students. “We were expecting to be 504, but we over-enrolled by 26 students, mainly because of our special-ed population,” Zgol said. … Acceptance into the school is determined by lottery, and many area parents have expressed interest in SAIL’s different educational approach. More than 1,000 pupils are on a waiting list to attend. …
