Mar 20, 2019, Chicago Daily Herald: West Elementary Introduces a Newly Designed Sensory Pathway https://www.dailyherald.com/submitted/20190319/west-elementary-introduces-a-newly-designed-sensory-pathway West Elementary School has introduced a newly redesigned sensory pathway for its students. The pathway offers students an opportunity to participate in a sensory break outside the classroom when needed. It is intended for students to release their energy and/or reduce building stress or apprehensions in a positive way. By allowing students to temporarily leave the classroom and walk the pathway, it limits classroom disruptions and increases the student's ability to refocus and re-center themselves. … By honing their own skills, students will soon be able to quickly assess their feelings, calm themselves down, and communicate with their teachers instantly.
Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
