Charlottesville, VA: Construction begins on 80 place autism day school

Nov 7, 2025, 29 News, Charlottesville, VA: Virginia Institute of Autism breaks ground on construction of new school

Construction officially kicked off this week at the Virginia Institute of Autism’s new Webb building, home of the future James C. Hormel Day School.

The expansion will include new classrooms, an all-abilities gym and outdoor space, and a multi-sensory arts and music room.

The Hormel School will double the size of VIA’s current school building space and will serve 80 students, a goal they have been chasing for quite some time.

“VIA was founded almost 30 years ago, and our student population has continued to grow,” said Rebecca Ellison, the Director of Advancement at VIA. “Our programs carry wait lists, and the vision of having a campus has been a dream of VIA’s for many, many years.”

Ellison says they’re aiming to officially open the school by fall of 2026. VIA has not quite reached its funding goal, so Ellison says she welcomes anyone who is interested in helping make the project a reality to come and speak with her.
