More children with autism and their families in Western New York will have access to evidence-based intervention programs following the relocation of the Institute for Autism Research to the University at Buffalo.

The move, which became effective June 2, was made possible through a $450,000 grant from The Children's Guild Foundation and additional support from UB. The nationally recognized institute is now part of the Department of Pediatrics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

The Institute for Autism Research, founded in 2009 at Canisius University by Christopher J. Lopata and Marcus Thomeer, focuses on improving social, behavioral and educational outcomes for children with autism through research-backed programs and services. . . .

The funding will allow the institute to establish needs-based tuition fees, expanding access to more families and creating opportunities to train and hire additional student intern clinicians and staff.

"We are so grateful that the funding from The Children's Guild Foundation is making our relocation to UB possible so that we can expand our reach to serve more families and continue leading-edge research," said Thomeer, who joined UB as a professor of pediatrics alongside Lopata on June 2. . . .

Since its founding, the institute's leaders have secured $11 million in research funding, published more than 100 peer-reviewed studies and served more than 1,400 children and families. They have also trained more than 600 students and interns and over 4,000 health care providers, teachers and counselors. . . .
