May 12, 2025, Tap into Basking Ridge: Bernards Township Celebrates Autism Acceptance
BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NJ – The Bernards Township committee recognized April as Autism Acceptance month at their Apri 29, 2025 meeting. Bernards Township Mayor Janice Fields said, “April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to honor the unique experience and strength of individuals on the Autism spectrum.” She highlighted the importance of the month, which she said is meant to increase “greater understanding, inclusion and support for Autistic people and their families.” Fields encouraged the community to “work together to build a more accepting and inclusive world where everyone is valued for who they are.”
Committeman David Tancredi called the month “an opportunity to celebrate the unique gifts and abilities of the individuals on the spectrum.” He said the township committee has the ability to foster Autism awareness by advocating for Austism-friendly programs and policies, supporting local organizations and initiatives that promote Autism awareness and provide vital resources, support and services to those individuals and families.
Committeewoman Ana Duarte McCarthy stressed the importance of Autism acceptance and highlighted community efforts such as the development of six group homes in Bernards Township. These homes, run by Our House Foundation, support adults with disabilities, including Autism. She praised the YMCA for their programming, specifically Saturdays in Motion, where Autistic children and their families come together for two hours of recreation.
McCarthy said that, prompted by a suggestion from Bernards Township resident Sue Trapp, the Bernards Township Parks and Recreation and the PGA will run a four-session free adaptive golf clinic for adults June 5-26.
McCarthy added, “While there’s progress, there’s a lot more to do.”
Bernards Township Co-President of Parents for Exceptional Children (PEC) Lindsay Pannucci thanked the township for recognizing April as Autism Acceptance Month. She said that for parents of children with Autism, “Inclusion and acceptance is really what the goal is and what they’re looking for.” She concluded, “Thank you for recognizing April for such a great cause.”
