Attleboro, MA: SPED costs soaring; district has $300K deficit

Dec 15, 2018, Attleboro (MA) Sun Chronicle: Attleboro schools facing a deficit due to special ed increases School officials say they are running into a deficit for this year, mostly due to higher than expected special education costs. Business and finance director Marc Furtado said the figure stands at about $300,000 right now. He said special education costs have been rising beyond expectations. The school department had children move into Attleboro who need service at out-of-district special education programs. Also, more children were designed for out-of-district services after hearings. Those requirements came after the budget for this fiscal year was set. That budget had already increased spending for the special programs by $1 million….
