Commercial Township, NJ: 27% of student are in SPED;elem. school gets therapy dog

Dooley, Skye’s owner and Commercial Township schools superintendent, said Skye works with students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. “He works Monday through Thursday, and he sees 70 students per week,” Dooley said. The presence of a therapy dog helps students who are in need of positive rewards, such as students with behavioral conditions or autism, he said. The district’s special education percentage is 27 percent, while the state’s average is 16 percent. “We’re significantly higher,” he said. “We had to think outside the box to better serve students, and the therapy dog worked in nice with that.” …
