Oct 24, 2017, Appleton (WI) Post-Crescent: Four takeaways from the Appleton schools budget http://www.postcrescent.com/story/news/education/2017/10/24/four-takeaways-appleton-schools-budget/753925001/ …The district committed $2 million to hire additional staff members for 2017-18. The new hires are mainly paraprofessionals, social workers, school psychologists and counselors at the elementary level, said Greg Hartjes, chief financial officer. Additional aides will help students who may be struggling with reading and math, while the social workers, psychologists and counselors will work with students who need help with mental health issues or coping with problems at home. "A lot of the challenges kids are bringing into the schools … require more from us to make sure those needs are met," Hartjes said. "You can't help them learn math, you can't help them learn reading and writing if they're worried about things outside of the classroom."
