The AUSD has sent out email missives and Superintendent Val Williams came to a recent Albany City Council meeting to ask for the public’s support. In addition, Williams and AUSD Board President Kim Trutane have traveled to Sacramento multiple times to speak to legislators. … Williams has been pushing a second bill, AB 3136, which would reform the state’s funding mechanism for special education. … “The needs of students with special needs have become much more complex,” Williams said. “Students on the autism spectrum, students who are visually impaired, students with learning disabilities.”… Underfunding of education is nothing new in California. The state has ranked near the bottom of per pupil spending for decades. Gov. Jerry Brown recently pushed for changes in the Local Control Funding Formula to benefit districts that have more disadvantaged students. Albany is not one of those districts….
