Akron, OH: Teachers pick school board meeting to protest handling of assaults by students

Twenty-two teachers have filed grievances this school year about the way the district has handled verbal and physical assaults by students. That includes one teacher who was body-slammed to the floor by a student, and then more recently was punched by another student. … “Instead of taking a no-tolerance approach, why don’t we try to get to the bottom of some of these situations?” James said. Inner-city kids who get into trouble often come from very difficult home situations, and often have special needs or an undiagnosed mental illness, he said. Before the Feb. 12 rally, he said, the district sat down with teachers’ union members and agreed to modify discipline practices and to provide more special-education staff members.
