Renae Rausch, director of special education services gave an update on 2018 special education numbers at Monday’s school board meeting. According to her report, special education students have increased from 745 in 2017 to 790 in 2018. This report is accurate as of Dec. 1. Rausch said that accounts for 18 percent of the student population. Rausch said she couldn’t point to a specific correlation that’s causing an increase in the numbers, but said the trend isn’t specific to Aberdeen, as several larger districts continue to see increases in special education students. The count includes students enrolled at Aberdeen Christian, Aberdeen Roncalli and Trinity Lutheran School. In 2017, 44 special education students were enrolled at these districts. Childhood Lost
Children today are noticeably different from previous generations, and the proof is in the news coverage we see every day. This site shows you what’s happening in schools around the world. Children are increasingly disabled and chronically ill, and the education system has to accommodate them. Things we've long associated with autism, like sensory issues, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and lack of social skills, are now problems affecting mainstream students. Blame is predictably placed on bad parenting (otherwise known as trauma from home).
Addressing mental health needs is as important as academics for modern educators. This is an unrecognized disaster. The stories here are about children who can’t learn or behave like children have always been expected to. What childhood has become is a chilling portent for the future of mankind.
